Summary:
When Omar gets a class assignment to write about how his family prepares for Ramadan, he is unsure about sharing his traditions. Omar's family has converted to Islam so their Ramadan preparations are quite different compared to his classmates whose traditions are go back for many generations. With a little encouragement and help, his essay turns out to be one to remember.
Review:
What a refreshing read. It is such a rare perspective to see a children's book about a child of Puerto Rican & Ecuadorian converts and how he is feeling different within his Muslim classroom. The setting of the story is in an Islamic school, An-Noor Islamic Academy. This early read chapter book teaches the reader so much about the diversity of our faith and really gives us unique insight of similar and different ways families prepare for Ramadan and Eid. The story is sprinkled with Spanish words and phrases. It includes two lists of glossaries, Spanish words and Islamic terms and a delicious recipe of Puerto Rican empanadas. I am grateful that the author has written this story and I have had the opportunity to read it. I would really recommend this book for all libraries, specifically Islamic schools and classrooms.
