How to Pray by Zanib Mian

๐ BOOK REVIEW ๐ Title: How to Pray Author: Zanib Mian @zanibmian Illustrator: N/A Publisher: Muslim Children's Books @muslimchildrensbooks Type: Non-Fiction Age: 7-11 Rating: 9/10 ๐ ๐ธ Islamic Content: Wudu and Salah. ๐ธ Concerns: none ๐ธ Summary: This is a step by step guide on how to perform wudu and salah. It begins with an introduction on how to actually use this book, how to follow the illustrations and visual indicators. Goes on to define wudu and takes the reader to a step by step process how to do it. It includes a page of wudu poppers (what breaks our wudu which would require us to redo). There is also a chart showing the daily Fard units as well as Sunnah units where applicable. It quickly touches on the conditions of prayer such as qibla direction, dress code and the choice of place of prayer. The prayer begins with the intention then moves on describe each position and the necessary recitation that accompanies it.
๐ธ Review: If parents are looking for a book that includes information on why we pray or the virtues of prayer, this is not the book. This book is carefully put together to teach and visually show the reader how each unit of prayer is performed. The stick man illustrations are accompanied by speaking bubbles and arrows to clearly show the movement taking place. The recitation for each step is written in Arabic along with its English transliteration. This gives the readers the opportunity to memorize especially to those who haven't had the chance to learn to read in Arabic. Minimal translation is included when there is emphasis on the context. I really love how they have considered that your child is learning the prayer from the book as they would be performing them side by side. It indicates which step to go to when praying two units, three units or four. The quirky and comical remarks make this book fun and engaging while keeping your little ones learning and giggling. It was the first time I had seen that vomiting invalidates the prayer. Upon looking further into the matter, it seems that it is a minor opinion of some scholars. To be fair, the front cover states that it covers different schools of thought as well as the content of the book is checked and approved by a scholar. There are additional side tips throughout the book to help improve salah. I can see it being used by older kids who are independent readers and using it as a reference until their prayer becomes second nature. I would definitely recommend this book. ๐ธ Available: @muslimchildrensbooks #howtopray #zanibmian #muslimchildrensbooks #muslimkidsbooks #islamickidsbooks #muslimauthor #muslimkidslit #raisingmuslimreaders
