Summary:
When Maya goes to a new country, everything is so different. She finds comfort in the memories of her Nani (grandmother) and carries the seeds her grandmother has gifted her. It is these seeds that help her find her way and blossom in the new country she has been planted.
Review:
This is such a sweet story of a little girl finding herself in a new place. As she navigates her daily life she lives through the memories from back home. The beautiful relationship she had with her Nani was once a reality. Her wrinkles, her smell, her prayers, her presence and her wisdom are now in Maya's memories. This book truly captures the overwhelming loneliness of an immigrant child that can be relatable in the very beginning of a new journey. I love the symbolism of the seeds and how parallels are drawn to blossoming flowers with the blossoming new friendships in a new place. The lovely story is tender, hopeful and dreamy. The words and illustrations are such a remarkable combination to bring this story to life. This would make an excellent classroom read to critically discuss emotional strain and kindness of newcomers.
