Muhiima's Quest by Rahma Rodaah

Muhiima's Quest by Rahma Rodaah

I first came to know about this book last year on social media that showcased the author, Rahma Rodaah, in an interview. It highly piqued my interest as I was curious to see how this delicate topic was presented.

📖

Alhamdulilah! I love it. Due to the importance of the lessons included, I think this is one of those books that every family needs to have, not just Muslim families.

📖

Muhiima, a Muslim girl, is sent on an unusual quest by her mother on her 10th birthday. Surprised and confused, Muhiima follows the map as a guide and is on her way to discover what is waiting for her at the end of this curious quest. Each family member she meets along the way gifts her a special box along with words of wisdom.

📖

Every Muslim child being raised in the west can relate to the main character in this book; her feelings of being different, her yearning to be like the rest of the crowd, the confusion of family beliefs that do not mirror the world outside her home.

📖

The author in this book does an excellent job at encouraging to embrace our differences in society as well as hold true to unique family traditions. As birthdays are not celebrated by many Muslim families, this can be a challenging discussion amongst muslim parents and their children. This book can be used as a discussion starter to tackle such an important topic. Appreciating our Muslim identity, guarding it and always knowing our roots. This book does not focus on why Muslims don't celebrate birthdays; it highlights the deeper values that come with being different compared to the societal norms. This storybook is targeted towards kids ages 6 and up, however the words of wisdom can be benefiting for all ages.

📖

The illustrations are very neat and clean, which I love. Although, after I read the book to my son (who is 4) he was inspecting the book cover and his immediate comment was "Muhiima forgot to wear her helmet!" Truth be told, I didn't even notice!

📖

Undoubtedly, this book is an exceptional pick for Muslim families to add to their libraries yet it has been written in a way that these core values can be benefitting to all.
