Two Sandals, Four Feet by Karen Lynn Williams & Khadra Mohammed

Two Sandals, Four Feet by Karen Lynn Williams & Khadra Mohammed
Another sweet refugee story that highlights a meaningful and temporary bond made in times of hardship and uncertainty.
📚
Barefoot Lina found the perfect fitting sandal in a crowd that was eager to get the best possible clothing distributed in the refugee camp. Soon she came to realize that the matching sandal was found by another barefooted girl named Feroza. This was the start of their unexpected friendship. Not only did they agree upon sharing their beautiful sandals, as their connection strengthened, they shared their hopes and dreams. Their bitter sweet separation is so touching.
📚
The illustrations depict the story line in a beautiful way. The focus on the story is the relationship these two girls build and not on the details of their struggles to get there. Lina travels with her mother and Feroza is accompanied by her grandmother at the camp. The reader is left to curiously ponder about the fate of their other family members. I appreciate this so much as it is a fact of life for those escaping war torn countries.
📚
Definitely a 'thumbs up' find in the public library. Although it would be considered a short picture book, I think kids ages 8 and up would be able to follow through this story. It is a must for all school libraries.
